MOTHER'S DAY 3 YEARS AGO

MY 12 BLESSINGS AND My wonderful husband who helped God make them!!!

Dear mom,

Thank-you for the best 20 years of life a son could ask for. I am who I am today because of you...for better or for worse. haha, kidding, for better of course. Everyone tells me that my mom is amazing and still so young and beautiful...and a Saint and that she is their role model and super-hero; and that is all true but really you are the best mom in the world because you love all 12 of us with total and complete self giving. There is nothing you could ever do to love us more. You bring the definition of sanctity down to earth. You are an amazing example to every woman of fidelity and love to our awesome dad. Thank you so much for being us the light of the Catholic faith in both word and practice. Thank you for always being there, forever and always....

Saying Goodbye:

It’s been over a month since my mom died. I haven’t written a column or blogged about her death. I think part of me does not want to have to remember that it really happened and that maybe it was just a bad dream. The tons of sympathy cards that still hang on my door reminding me that my dear mommy is gone. I attended a funeral today of another pillar of Bowie, Mr. Paul Palumbo, whose wonderful family will continue his love for God, family, Bowie, a good work ethic, and baseball. Hopefully his legacy and good example will live on in our community.
I recently found my notes from one very special night when I was with my mom waiting for her to pass into a better place.
I’m sitting here with my other seven living siblings in an all night vigil for my momma…Betsy and Steve each have one of moms hands with whispers that they love her and its ok to go. Tommy’s playing the guitar singing to his oldest and dearest sweetheart. Pete is singing with him, while Michael moans in sheer delight at their serenade. Shari and Joan lay on the couches close by, exhausted after yesterday’s rough time trying to make their hero and best friend comfortable. I sit by the fire thinking that this is what it’s all about…family. We have been sitting at moms house all day taking turns holding her hand, rubbing her back, cheering her on to Daddy who has been waiting for her for ten years, mom’s thoughts of longing for her sweet daughter Nanette, who left us way to early at the age of 39, who has been gone for 20 years, and the pain stings like it was yesterday.

All differences are put aside as we cuddle, hug, rub backs, and eat comfort food and coffee. It’s almost one in the morning and the vigil gets giddy as stories of fun, pain, and shenanigans are shared. More than once have we rushed to mom’s bedside to hold each other and prepare for her last breathe. This truly amazing women gasp for yet another and holds on for what seems like forever as she labors with each sigh. Every once and awhile we will get a smile, a finger tapping or an answer to the many questions that we eight children pour out to this poor soul like a toddler looking for a cookie. We all have hope that something we say will help her let go and fall into the hands of the God she taught us to trust.

Mother's Day 2010: MOVIE REVIEW MONDAY...

My movie review Monday has a twist...we watched old family movies...I challenge you to do the same this month...go ahead...the kids will love it!!!

This Mother's Day was one of the best days ever...

Woke up around 8 am with my 7 month old snoring in my ear, my four year old daughter staring at me, my husband doing dishes in the kitchen, and hearing my 2 year old asking daddy if mommy was sick?

My four year old then brought me breakfast in bed. Granola and yogart, with some tea.

Then I got to lay in bed and have some quiet meditation time with my Lord.

One by one the kids came in to tell me Happy Mother's Day.

I finally decided to roll out of bed around 8:50am so the kids could give me presents.

I got jade earrings, bracelet, and necklace...(good job daddy and amazon) A really nice card from my oldest daughter with a workout video for us to do when she moves back home in 10 days!!!

Then off to 10am mass and Marian procession.

Home to lunch and getting ready for two soccer games.

My husband and 15 year old daughter went to my 17 year olds game...my 20 year old daughter and 8 year old son came with me to my 10 & 12 year olds game. My 14 year old daughter stayed home with the four youngest.

Got home and got bikes and picnic ready for my "outing".

We all road bikes to my favorite pond that I grew up going to.

Had a picnic and fed the geese.

Made it home safely and watched family movies...the little guys were very upset that there were only 3 kids in the movie and wanted to know where they were...the big ones said to just pretend it was them since they all looked the same anyway.

Then 8 of my kids layed in bed with me (one of my favorite things) and watched Extreme Home Makeover (my favorite show) with me.

Then off to bed for everyone.

Thank you God and thank you honey & kids for a great day!!!

Are you ashamed of your MOTHER?

Every Mother’s Son: Confessions of a Marian Prodigal
Some Catholics are ashamed of their mother. They have forsaken their rich heritage of Marian devotions for many reasons. Have you?

Catholic.net
For all my newfound piety, I was still fifteen years old, and all too conscious of “cool.”

Just months before, I’d left behind several years of juvenile delinquency and accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. My parents, who were not particularly devout Presbyterians, noticed the change in me and heartily approved. If it took religion to keep me out of juvenile detention, so be it.

Zeal for my new faith consumed me, most of the time. But, one spring day, I was aware of something else consuming me. I had a stomach bug, with all the unpleasant symptoms. I explained my predicament to my homeroom teacher, who sent me to the school nurse. The nurse, after taking my temperature, told me to lie down while she phoned my mother.

From the conversation I overheard, I could tell I’d be going home. I felt instant relief and dozed off.

I awoke to a sound that cut me like a razor. It was my mother’s voice, and it was saturated with maternal pity.

“Ah,” she said when she saw me lying there. Then suddenly it dawned on me. My mother is taking me home. What if my friends see her leading me out of the school? What if she tries to put her arm around me? I’ll be a laughingstock. . . .

Humiliation was on its way. I could already hear the guys jeering at me. Did you see his mother wiping his forehead?

If I had been Catholic, I might have recognized the next fifteen minutes as purgatorial. But to my evangelical imagination, they were sheer hell. Though I stared at the ceiling above the nurse’s couch, all I could see was a long and unbearable future as “Mama’s Boy.”

I heard the office door click open and Mom’s voice exchanging pleasantries with the nurse. I sat up to face a woman approaching me with the utmost pity. Indeed, it was her pity that I found most repugnant. Implicit in every mother’s compassion is her “little” child’s need — and such littleness and neediness are most definitely not cool.

“Mom,” I whispered, before she could get a word out. “Do you suppose you could walk out ahead of me? I don’t want my friends to see you taking me home.”

My mother didn’t say a word. She turned and walked out of the nurse’s office, out of the school, and straight to her car. From there, she mothered me home, asking how I felt, making sure I went to bed with the usual remedies.

It had been a close call, but I was pretty sure I’d escaped with my cool intact. I drifted off to sleep in almost-perfect peace. It wasn’t till that night that I thought about my “cool” again. My father visited my room to see how I was feeling. Fine, I told him. Then he looked gravely at me.

“Scottie,” he said, “your religion doesn’t mean much if it’s all talk. You have to think about the way you treat other people.” Then came the clincher: “What you did to your mother today was shameful.”

I didn’t need an explanation. I could see that Dad was right, and I was ashamed of myself for being ashamed of my mother.

Generation Gap

Yet isn’t that the way it is with many Christians? As He hung dying on the cross, in His last will and testament, Jesus left us a mother. “When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing near, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home’ ” (Jn 19:26-27).

We are His beloved disciples, His younger siblings (see Heb 2:12). His heavenly home is ours; His Father is ours; and His mother is ours. Yet how many Christians are taking her to their homes?

Moreover, how many Christian churches are fulfilling the New Testament prophesy that “all generations” will call Mary “blessed” (Lk 1:48)? Most Protestant ministers — and here I speak from my own past experience — avoid even mentioning the mother of Jesus, for fear they’ll be accused of “crypto-Catholicism.” Sometimes the most zealous members of their congregations have been influenced by shrill anti-Catholic polemics. To them, Marian devotion is “idolatry” that “puts Mary between God and man” or “exalts Mary at Jesus’ expense.” Thus, you’ll sometimes find Protestant churches named after St. Paul, St. Peter, St. James, or St. John — but almost never see one named for St. Mary.

You’ll frequently find pastors preaching on Abraham or David, Jesus’ distant ancestors, but almost never hear a sermon on Mary, His mother. Far from calling her “blessed,” most generations of Protestants live their lives without calling her at all.

This is not just a “Protestant problem.” Too many Catholics and Orthodox Christians have abandoned their rich heritage of Marian devotions. They’ve been cowed by the polemics of Fundamentalists, shamed by the snickering of dissenting theologians, or made sheepish by well-meaning but misguided ecumenical sensitivities. They’re happy to have a mom who prays for them, prepares their meals, and keeps their home; they just wish she’d stay safely out of sight when others are around who “just wouldn’t understand.”

Unstrung

I, too, have been guilty of this filial neglect — not only with my earthly mother, but also with my mother in Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary. The path of my conversion led me from juvenile delinquency to Presbyterian ministry. All along the way, I had my anti-Marian moments.

My earliest encounter with Marian devotion came when my Grandma Hahn died. She’d been the only Catholic on either side of my family, a quiet, humble, and holy soul. Since I was the only “religious” one in the family, my father gave me her religious articles when she died. I looked at them with horror. I held her rosary in my hands and ripped it apart, saying, “God, set her free from the chains of Catholicism that have bound her.” I meant it, too. I saw the rosary and the Virgin Mary as obstacles that came between Grandma and Jesus Christ.

Even as I slowly approached the Catholic faith — drawn inexorably by the truth of one doctrine after another — I could not make myself accept the Church’s Marian teaching. The proof of her maternity would only come, for me, when I made the decision to let myself be her son. Despite all the powerful scruples of my Protestant training —remember, just a few years before, I had torn apart my Grandma’s beads — I took up the rosary one day and began to pray. I prayed for a very personal, seemingly impossible intention.. On the next day, I took up the beads again, and the next day, and the next. Months passed before I realized that my intention, the seemingly impossible situation, had been reversed since the day I first prayed the rosary. My petition had been granted.

From Here to Maternity

From that moment, I knew my mother. From that moment, I believe, I truly knew my home in the covenant family of God: Yes, Christ was my brother. Yes, He’d taught me to pray “Our Father.” Now, in my heart, I accepted His command to behold my mother.

WIFE AND MOTHER:

This quote from Pope Pius XII captures the beauty of what a wife and mom can do in the home: "Yes, the wife and mother is the radiant sun of the family. She is the sun by her generosity and gift of self, by her unfailing readiness, by her watchful and prudent delicacy in all matters which can add joy to the lives of her husband and children. She spreads around her light and warmth."

Thanks Father Michael Sliney LC for reminding me!!!

My wonderful state in life !?@*

Part of my morning routine when I am pregnant is waking up around 6 putting on my support hose and heading out to 6:30am mass before the kids wake up. Sometimes...like this morning as I was walking out the door I thought I heard a squeak...should I just keep going and pretend I didn't hear the baby or EMBRACE my state in life and go get my boy.

I went upstairs and found my almost 2 year old playing "guys" with his 7 and 9 year old brother...oh yea, he had a real stinky diaper...so I stayed home and played playmobile with the boys for about an hour.

So much for making mass...I guess I will just say a good Spiritual Communion Prayer:

Spiritual Communion Prayer

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.

Sorry gotta go...I hear at least three of my "state in life" calling me!!!

Visions of mom...

My mom is great...she raised nine children and was a devoted wife and mother. Her generation took being a house wife seriously. Our house was always clean, meals were always great, and she catered to my dad like he was a king. Oh if I could only do as well!!!

I once was at a mother/daughter potluck where a young lady who was one of twelve shared a story of what memory she had of her mom...It was of her mom sitting in a chair in their living room holding a rosary, with green socks on.

What will my kids remember? Probably not cleaning, or cooking a real tasty dinner, and unfortunately not treating their dad like a king. OH, for progress. I am constantly working on cleaning, I would love to be a better cook, and I try to treat my husband as the king of our home.

On Sat. night, my husband took five of the kids to a ball game with our parish. So I stayed home with three youngest and my 16 year old son. After I put everyone to bed my five year old remembered how hungry she was...so she came down for a bite to eat. I gave her some food and went to bed. As I was in bed she came in to tell me she was heading up. I sat in my bed watching a movie with my laptop on my lap. As she headed up...I thought wow, what a memory she will have of me tonight. Will this be embedded in her memory? Wouldn't I rather her remember me sitting on a chair saying the rosary with green socks on?

Well, she just came back down...so off to cuddle and rub her back...maybe that will replace the lazy vision of her mom in her head.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY...

MOTHERS

Real Mothers don't eat quiche;
They don't have time to make it.

Real Mothers know that their kitchen utensils
Are probably in the sandbox.

Real Mothers often have sticky floors,
Filthy ovens and happy kids.

Real Mothers know that dried play dough
Doesn't come out of carpets.

Real Mothers don't want to know what
The vacuum just sucked up.

Real Mothers sometimes ask 'Why me?'
And get their answer when a little
Voice says, 'Because I love you best.'

Real Mothers know that a child's growth
Is not measured by height or years or grade...
It is marked by the progression of Mommy to Mom to Mother...

The Images of Mother

4 YEARS OF AGE - My Mommy can do anything!

8 YEARS OF AGE - My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!

12 YEARS OF AGE - My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.

14 YEARS OF AGE - Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either.

16 YEARS OF AGE - Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.

18 YEARS OF AGE - That old woman? She's way out of date!

25 YEARS OF AGE - Well, she might know a little bit about it!

35 YEARS OF AGE - Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.

45 YEARS OF AGE - Wonder what Mom would have thought about It?

65 YEARS OF AGE - Wish I could talk it over with Mom.

The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair.

The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes,
Because that is the doorway to her heart,
The place where love resides.
The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole,
But true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.
It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she
Shows, and the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows!

PUT YOUR GAME FACE ON!!!

MY boys are always saying this!!!

What is my game face...unfortunately it tends to be a scowl. I used to be a fun and laughing mom...then I had teenagers...now I don't mean to hit hard on the teens all the time, but I have to always have my game face on with them. Any time I think I understand them, put my guard down, or don't need to constantly "parent" them I get disappointed.

I have found that in the past couple of years my new game face is putting on makeup and jewelry. I am not a big one on make up. I even went about 10 years without wearing any. Jewelry on the other hand just didn't work with infants...but, I gave in and started wearing makeup, then earrings, and an occasional necklace here or there...I just moved up to lipstick...(are you happy now mom!!!)

It was then that I started feeling better about myself and my "professional" job as a wife and mother. I started getting away from my frumpy self and tried to look nice when my husband came home and giving myself an uplift in the morning, even if it was just moisturizer. Of course I have my days when I don't brush my teeth till lunch...but, I have come along way baby!!!

I have also found that I have been a much better example as a wife, mother, catholic, and homeschooler since I have made myself look more presentable. I get the comment often that I don't look like I am expecting my 12Th child...I guess I should take that as a compliment. I love being able to put aside the bad opinion people have of moms, catholics, and homeschoolers!!!

So let's all put on our game faces and show the world how awesome we can be!!!
