Labor and delivery:

Getting to hold my sweet baby about 2 hours after I delivered him. He was so perfect!

For all my family and friends who have been praying and calling, I am so sorry I haven’t been able to talk or return your calls, so I started writing and writing what exactly happened. For those that don’t really know me…I am a very talkative and detailed person; much to the dismay of all my school teachers!

This journal started to be a insert for Steven’s baby book until I realized that I had over 5,000 words. I tried conducing it to just the labor and delivery to answer so many questions people have asked me. Feel free to delete or pass on to all those who have been praying for our MIRACLE! We believe all of the prayers and support we received was part of our MIRACLE.

On week two of bed rest, July 31st., I was visiting with my friend Lilly that I have known for 40 years who has been coming every couple of days to visit. When she started to leave, my sister Betsy came to do her daily pampering of me, and then I went to use the bathroom.  When I got there I realized that I was bleeding heavy and just passed a clot. I asked the kids to get their aunt right away. My husband was out of the house so my 18 year old daughter got stuck taking me to the doctor’s office. When I got to the office it was packed, I explained to the nurse that I was told to come in due to an emergency, and was there a place I could lay flat since I was on bed rest. The poor secretary looked at the full office and sadly said, “No, I am so sorry.” I explained that I would lie down in the hall and wait. Luckily there was a bench in the hall and I laid flat on it and waited and waited and waited. Finally after 35 minutes my husband came and my daughter got to go home with the other kids. Since I was still drinking water constantly had to use the bathroom so my husband and I went into the office and they said they just had a room open. I went to the bathroom and was checked by my favorite PA. The poor PA, she tried and tried to hear a heartbeat and kept making excuses that the doppler was old and probably had a bad battery. So, to play it safe, she sent us to the specialist.

After waiting a bit we were finally admitted to the room where the sonographer prepped me and started to check the baby…I promptly said, “Could you just check to see if the heart is beating?” But no, it was not. The specialists walked in; sadden by the news he had to share. I looked at him and said, “Poor Dr., the PA was just too chicken to give us the news and made you be the bad guy!”After he joked about having a couple of beers, he explained us that we could go right to the hospital or go home and go to the hospital the next day. Being that the hospital was only five minutes away, we decided to get things over with.

Once in the hospital we quietly slipped in and got admitted. Of course I kind of hid in the corner crying even though many sweet staff kept trying to comfort and inquire on my well being. Then we were ushered into a hospital room. After a couple hours the nurse started the medication to induce labor. I was so nervous; I always have long hard labors and I had never had an induction or used drugs during a delivery except for my c section.

I kept texting my old nurse midwife with questions about what to do and what drugs would be best. She reassured me that since the baby had already died that the medication wouldn’t affect the baby so not to worry. Just to do what is best for my comfort. Thoughts of offering up all the pain of delivery for the unborn came to mind. It was always easier for me to do in the past when I was sure my baby would soon be in alive in my arms.

We later tried to go to sleep. Around one in the morning I woke up feeling a little discomfort. I tossed and turned for an hour than the nurse came in and suggested some stadol to help me sleep. Around four AM I told the nurse that the medication was either wearing off or the contractions were getting worse. At 4:40AM I felt the need to go to the bathroom and got up and dragged my IV and once I got into the bathroom I realized was bleeding heavy. I then felt a gentle sensation and caught my precious baby Steven Thomas in my hands on Aug. 1st, feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori. It was a beautiful experience and way more special than I ever expected. Thank you Jesus! I called my husband and nurse came right away and they helped me to bed where I had the opportunity to hold Steven all morning. Thank God my sister remembered to hand my daughter the holy water before we left for the doctors, because I looked at my husband and said, “We forgot the holy water!” He just put his hand in his pocket and handed it to me. So the two of us baptized STEVEN THOMAS, and thanked God for our time together.

One of our nurses, Sarah, had such a gentle touch and gift for attention to detail with our little baby. When we were ready she took Steven and next to my bed, she cleaned and wrapped him up like he was hers. She stuck a little hat on him and gave him a photo shoot that any movie star would have been proud of! She took all sorts of pictures of him with his blanket, a stuffed lion, a butterfly, a special bracelet, and him with his hands folded. It was so beautiful. He was about 1/2 lb and eight inches long. I have been prolife all my life...I was adopted...so of course I was! I worked in a pregnancy center, attended marches, pro life talks, and have been know, on occasion to get arrested for protesting in front of clinics! Never have I felt more prolife than when I held my perfect baby in my arms.

He had perfect arms, ears, lips, tongue, nostrils, toes, legs, tiny fingernails that needed to be cut, and the cutest little umbilical cord you could ever imagine.  Sarah gave my husband and I our hospital bracelets with baby boy, and time and date written on it, she said, "Here you two, you are his parents; so you need a bracelet too!" This would be added to the memory book they gave us to bring home.

Unfortunately due to Steven being so small the umbilical cord detached from the placenta. The doctor let me rest for an hour before trying to deliver the placenta. Even after an hour it was still hard to get the entire placenta out. So they sent me to the dreaded operating room,  it was like a horror film I had always feared. The walls were white; doctors and nurses ran around grabbing medical tools and supplies, giving medication to me to make me more comfortable. All I remember is a doctor putting tubes in my nose and I started crying, asking for my husband.  It was probably one of the worst situations I had ever been in. So the unborn got lots of prayers anyway!

When I was back in my room I had complete chills and couldn’t stop shivering. They wrapped me in warm blankets, socks, and some sleeping bag thing that had a hose that blew in hot air. My poor husband kept making me hot chocolate and holding the Steven at the same time. Then I started to feel tired, queasy, and sick. I didn’t want to fall asleep because I was sure I wouldn’t wake up.  I told my husband that I thought I was going to die, just what any man with 12 kids, sitting there holding his  precious baby, trying to mourn his life, wants to hear. Thoughts of my friend Dave, who had been going through chemo and felt so sick after each bought, kept coming to mind, and I prayed and prayed for him. I kept looking at the clock thinking that there was no way I would be going home today to see my other babies. My husband assured me it was all the medication coming out of my system and I would be fine.  After a quick rest and lots of ginger ale I started to snap out of it.

As soon as I got my act together I asked for the doctor so I could go home. I got my release and got dressed held on to Steven and was ready to go. In came the very sweet social worker who asked questions and shared her condolences. Then she looked me in the eye and said, “It says here you want to take the baby home with you, unfortunately it is against hospital policy.”  Well I almost jumped out of the bed! I explained that I had informed everyone 24 hours ago and when I was there 2 weeks ago that I was taking my baby home. I had done what they asked and got a casket and contacted the funeral home. Now as I was walking out the door they say I can’t take him home?! As calmly as I could I said that I had talked to a nurse and a priest and both said it is the parent’s rights to take their baby, and I would call my lawyer if necessary. The poor social worker almost fell over.

So after waiting for her to return for about 45 minutes I was getting more upset and wanted to go home to see my other babies. I finally contacted the funeral home near our house and explained the situation. The super, wonderful man said he would send someone over in an hour. I asked the nurse to come in and she and the nurse supervisor came in and I tried to calmly explain my frustration. It went a little like this, “I realize you have policies, but I told the staff that I was taking my baby home and everyone just smiled at me. Since I am trying to compromise and I really want to go home with my other children, I have contacted the funeral home and they are coming now to get Steven.  Hopefully you will learn from this and help other families who desire to do the same.”

The nurses were so great and understanding and apologetic. They made a heroic attempt to wheel me quietly out to the hall, down the staff hallway, in the staff elevator as I was holding my tiny infant wrapped in his blanket, so I wouldn’t need to see anyone or they see me. It was the saddest little procession with all the nurses at the station gently bowing their heads and smiling at me, I am sure they were all part of the instant meeting with the social worker about the mom in room 215 who was half nuts and wanted to bring her baby home. Then they gently wheeled me to meet the funeral staff who carefully opened the car for me to gently place my little precious baby in a small box with a cute little blue pillow and blanket. The nurses hugged me goodbye and said how sorry they were for our loss, of course I was now in tears, thanked them for all their help and said goodbye.

We headed home to a house full of wonderful children who hugged and loved each other all night. My husband and I were so grateful to God for the many blessings and graces that surrounded us, but couldn’t figure out how to shake this sorrow. We were trying to console each other in the dark of the night and we knew that somehow we would get through this. We discussed how excited we were and how much we wanted this precious baby. We decided together we were a great team and with our strong faith we would find a way.

On August 3, 2012 we packed up the15 passenger van and headed to the chapel to bury our precious baby. The sun was beating down and we marched over to the red velvet chairs set up on the green carpet to send off our baby Steven Thomas. The little gifts that the kids carried went next to the beautiful metal box that held their precious brother. Monsignor put in a St Anthony medal and a small rosary that he found and the prayers were said. My sister shared a pleasant reading that was just perfect. Everyone placed a beautiful white rose on the casket and the kids watched in amazement as the hole was unveiled. The casket was placed in the hole and the little boys threw down their gifts in the hole like they were pitching for the Orioles!

We quietly walked away and went to visit my mom, dad, sister, and our baby HOPE who died when I was 8 weeks pregnant, who are also, buried on the perfect Chapel Hill. Then we packed up the van and headed home to try to live on. We all try to walk around and get on with life especially my husband and I who pretend to be moving on.  Although deep in our hearts is a hole that only Christ can fill with his love and compassion.

We miss you Steven Thomas please pray for us!

PRAYERS FOR THOSE IN LABOR:

I started a site years ago Praying for Women in Labor. It is very important for me to pray for those who are having a baby. Although, it never quit got off the ground.

So, I will continue to pray for all those who want to send me their prayer requests. Just post a comment on my blog or at fatzbinx18@gmail.com . I will post requests on my regular blog asking for prayers for mom's in labor. So it is really just combining two blogs in one.

Here are some of the prayers I find helpful:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to they protection, implored they help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Prayer of Parents for their Children
O Lord, omnipotent Father, we give you thanks for having given us children. They are our joy, and we accept with serenity the worries, fears and labors which bring us pain. Help us to love them sincerely. Through us you gave life to them; from eternity you knew them and loved them. Give us the wisdom to guide them, patience to teach them, vigilance to accustom them to the good through our example. Support our love so that we may receive them back when they have strayed and make them good. It is often so difficult to understand them, to be as they would want us to be, to help them go on their way. Grant that they may always see our home as a haven in their time of need. Teach us and help us, O good Father, through the merits of Jesus, your Son and our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Entrustment of the Family
Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary, I come to you to entrust myself, my entire family, and my parish family to your two hearts. I desire to renew the vows of my baptism and place each member of my family through an act of faith, hope and love into loving union with the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. I dedicate myself, each member of my family, and my parish family to the Guardian Angels God has given each one of us. O Holy Guardian Angels, enlighten, guide and protect each one so as to lead us safely home to heaven.
At Fatima, dear Mother of God, you appeared with St. Joseph and the Child Jesus blessing the world. O Holy Family, bestow blessings upon me, my entire family, and my parish family so that we may live the Christ - life. I desire that each member of my family, and my parish family adore always the Most Blessed Trinity and love our God in the most Blessed Sacrament.
Grant peace to each member of my family, and my parish family. Keep each one in the grace of Jesus Christ. Never permit any of my family, or my parish family to stray from the true faith. (For any family member, or parish family member, who has strayed, I beseech you to bind up the wounds, lift up the fallen, restore and keep each of our loved ones in grace. Bid them come back to their Father's true home.) Amen.

A Prayer to St. Gerard for Motherhood
O glorious Saint Gerard, powerful intercessor before God, and wonder worker of our day, I call upon you and seek your help. You who always fulfilled God's will on earth, help me to do God's holy will. Intercede with the Giver of life, from whom all parenthood proceeds, that I may conceive and raise children who will please God in this life, and be heirs to the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

A Prayer to St. Gerard for Safe Delivery
O great Saint Gerard, beloved servant of Jesus Christ, perfect imitator of your meek and humble Savior, and devoted child of Mother of God, enkindle within my heart one spark of that heavenly fire of charity which glowed in your heart and made you an angel of love. O glorious Saint Gerard, because when falsely accused of crime, you did bear, like your Divine Master, without murmur or complaint, the calumnies of wicked men, you have been raised up by God as the patron and protector of expectant mothers. Preserve me from danger and from the excessive pains accompanying childbirth, and shield the child which I now carry, that it may see the light of day and receive the purifying and life-giving waters of baptism through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sunday's Gospel...

Mark 9:30-37

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it. He was teaching his disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death he will rise." But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him. They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they remained silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all." Taking a child he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it he said to them, "Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the one who sent me."

God is so good to me...Sunday morning I was blessed to be brought communion. As I was listening to the above gospel, I tried hard to concentrate, I had tears in my eyes at the thought of Jesus coming to me. Then reality hit as I heard my four younger boys playing up stairs above me...all I could hear was the nine year old yelling..."Luke, Luke, I am your father!" They were playing star wars with the two year old...then I heard the three year old riding a truck in the other room pushing the buttons that made it sound like a mac truck backing up...

"Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the one who sent me."

Ok, Lord I will!!!

NFP...

Wow what a response over at Coffee Talk with Danille Bean+ I wish I had time to read all of the posts. It looks like Wednesday's are going to be NFP day at FAITH and FAMILY. So go their for interesting posts and insights.

First off I have to say that I think NFP is a gift to us from God. I know many people who have used and use NFP for various reasons. My husband and I took NFP classes when we were engaged. We even defended it on our Engaged Encounter!!! Months later we each decided separately in prayer that we thought God had other, BIGGER, (ha-ha) plans for us!!! So in April a month before our wedding...I knew I was going to be fertile on our honeymoon-and we were both thrilled...the rest is history!!! We had baby after baby, thank God for my great health, and even times when we considered using NFP to GET PREGNANT!!! So we are expecting #12 in September and are thrilled to pieces!!! May God Bless all my friends and family who want more babies!!! My heart also goes out to my friends and family whose health is that pregnancy is too dangerous at this time+++

Home births

From Danielle Bean at Faith and Family Live: "So how about you? Have you ever given birth at home? Would you consider it?"

Yes I have!!! Out of my 11 children 9 were born at home. The first in the hospital because everyone thought I was crazy to deliver at home. After my not so bad experience, I decided hospitals weren’t for me...I am sure the hospital staff agreed that they didn’t want me to come back. TO demanding...To concerned...To picky!!!So the next seven were born at home...healthy and happy!!! When I had my ninth, the insurance would not pay for home birth, just birthing center...bummer!!!So she was born there. It was ok, but not my bed and my house...the next one we got to have at home-because the insurance people made the mistake of saying “in print” that I could have a home birth. Then we couldn’t have #11 at home, again due to insurance. I would love to have more home births. It is not for every family and my certified birth midwives interview each client to make sure they are ready and really know what they are getting into.

God bless!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO my baby E!!!

I can't believe my sweet little guy is one!!! You have been so sweet and such a joy to our family!!! When you were born a whopping 11lbs. on the FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION I knew God had BIG plans for you!!! My labor was very difficult and dad and I shiver at the thought of what we would of done without our amazing midwife Alice. Aunt Betsy says I looked like gumby the way we moved my body to get you out...enough of that talk...you came and I don't think I stopped nursing you for three months.

It was an interesting first week. The day you were born we came home from the Birthing Center hours after you arrived so the rest of your siblings and Geama could see you!!! Your God mom Alex was there, but she fell asleep...what a blessing that was...I don't think she could of handled seeing that delivery!!! I know I couldn't of handled her watching this one!!! It was only minutes after your birth that I got the news that your God father Joshua wanted to spend a year in discernment of a future vocation...if you and I were OK...in my tears as I nursed you I clearly heard God (or Monsignor Hogan-my dead old pastor) say, "The Lord giveith, the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord!!!"Job 1: 20-21.

After lots of love from everyone else, especially "C" who announced when she saw you one of her first clear words, "BABY E!!!" and it stuck like glue!!! Then the visitors started coming...the first were Caleb's friends on their bikes from the pool...Luke, Jake, and Joey...To see those sweet teenage boys riding up through my window with excitement in their eyes, did my heart good...I think it was at that point I gave them each permission to marry any of my five daughters.

Then the real excitement came...our friends the W's from New Hampshire were scheduled to come for a visit and stay with us...totally against the mom's better judgement...but I convinced her I would probably be my typical 10 days late and I needed her here to help me get ready. Of course I didn't let the kids breathe a word of my labor and the baby already being here when they called or she would of made her hubby turn the van around...anyway the kids really were looking forward to the visit and it took them away from bugging me too much...o yeah, did I mention they had 10 kids? Five boys and five girls just like we did not to mention the other freaky similarities we share...all of our kids are the same ages...all were the same sex till the eighth...my fault...and the personalities are very similar...talk about God giving you a support system...the funny things like the kids being born on each others due dates, etc...weird...we wanted to write a book till I messed up with not having a girl #8...o well, the only crazy thing is the spouses are mixed up...Mom W and my husband are twins separated at birth...and Dad W and I are kindred spirits!!!

I thought this post was going to be about my baby E...well E it took me six days to actually walk normally...I had never really had such post delivery pain before...but Alice and I decided that I must of past my diabetes test by accident...so next pregnancy no sweets and lots of exercise!!!

Speaking of next pregnancy...so sorry sweetie...my favorite gift to my one year old babies is...the announcement of a new sibling...ooh for the days when I was young and Daddy didn't wear bike shorts and use a laptop...ouch-sorry honey!!! I need to blame someone!!!

Happy First Birthday Sweet Baby E...promise you will always stay sweet...especially when you are a teenager!!!

My Joshy turns 17...

Picture of Joshua with his baby brother and Godson Eric... PRAYER OF ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (ONE OF JOSHUA'S FAVORITE PRAYERS)

Lord Jesus Christ, Take all my freedom. My memory, my understanding and my will. All that I have and cherish You have given me. I surrender it all to be guided by your will. Your grace and your love are wealth enough for me. Give me these, Lord Jesus, and I ask for nothing more.

My oldest son Joshua turns 17 today...it seems like yesterday when I was 15 days late and drinking Castor oil...I do not suggest this...especially when you try to dilute it with orange juice. If you do take it, contact your midwife, doctor, or a plumber before digesting. Follow it with a strong drink, not vodka, but strong juice or soda, do not try to mix them, it make for a larger amount of consumption.

I became pregnant when my oldest was six months old who was just nursing and I was 22. (oh to be young again)

I was really excited about this delivery, my first home birth!!! I contacted my midwife to say things were starting and my husband and I were off to mass and we would meet her at our home in an hour or so. I also contacted my nurse, my sister, and a friend who would be watching our (at the time) Christian Bookstore for us. As we got dressed...it happened. The Castor oil kicked, punched, and knocked me out...my legs started to shake uncontrollable and I was having contractions as well as my bowels emptying. My husband contacted everyone to say come here and quick. When they got here things went fast and all I remember is my sister, husband, and a friend holding my up so the midwife could pull out my son who I had just delivered his head...not the body yet. Well with much help, he came out. Since I didn't see the delivery, you will have to check out my funnier, and handsome husband's post for the gory details.

Joshua was the first of many home deliveries, none as fast or shaky. He was our fussiest baby and I am sure he had some type of food allergy that we never found. When I got pregnant with the next baby people were shocked that we must have been serious with this pro life stuff because Joshua was one of the fussiest babies they had seen. Joshua grew to be one of the easiest going, pleasant, crowd pleaser we have.

He is planning on attending the seminary in the fall and we are very proud of this decision and will miss him very much.

God Bless you Joshua, we love you sweetie. +JMJ+
